The Keys to a Man’s Wallet

A gentleman’s wallet needs to be both functional and presentable. Only a kid pulls out a lump of nylon stuffed with cash, business cards, and every credit card he can get. If you pull out something tattered, overloaded, and spilling cards and receipts, you’ll look an idiot in front of your girlfriend, boss, or client. The only out then is a hell of a good story about why you carry such a pathetic wallet.

The contents of a gentleman’s wallet should be pared down to the essentials: an adequate amount of cash, a credit card or two (the average American carries seven), and a driver’s license. I also carry my pistol permit and a few business cards. But keep it simple. Photos are better kept on your phone. Your social security card has no business being in your wallet. As for receipts, transfer them from your wallet to a file folder as soon as you get home.  To save space in your wallet, use your smart phone to keep photograph copies of important cards and files on a secure cloud-based service or behind an encrypted wall.

·      There are a few classic wallet styles, including: The Leather Billfold Wallet: Your basic bi-fold or tri-fold wallet in plain black leather is a reliable workhorse. It’s perfectly acceptable in just about any social or business setting and holds the daily essentials. It’s simple, elegant, and ageless.

·      Sport Wallets: Usually made from a synthetic weave, these wallets are made in brighter colors and with features for men who need to ensure the contents of the wallet stay put. These are great when you go into the outdoors; but they don’t fit in a dinner jacket.

·      Super Slim Wallets: Often fashionable, these thin, but strong wallets force you to carry only what you need—cash, cards, and ID—and don’t leave an unsightly or uncomfortable bulge in your interior coat pocket.

Money Clips: Often underrated, metal clips can be eye-catching, and even double as pocket knives. Etsy.com has a great collection.
