Four of Buddhism’s Eight Precepts deal with speech. This is unlike any other code. It treats language as something that can harm others, but--and so many today don't consider this--also ourselves.
Buddhism’s Eight Precepts
Buddha taught the precepts to help men live free from guilt from wrongdoing, so that people can progress more easily on their path to enlightenment.
1. I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking life.
2. I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking what is not given.
3. I undertake the training rule to abstain from sexual misconduct.
4. I undertake the training rule to abstain from false speech.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from malicious speech.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from harsh speech.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from useless speech.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from drinks and drugs that cause heedlessness.
