At the Winter Olympics gold-medal game was Jack Hughes scored the dramatic overtime winning goal that gave the United States men's national ice hockey team a 2-1 victory over the Canada on February 22, 2026 — the first Olympic gold in men’s hockey for the U.S. since the famed “Miracle on Ice” in 1980.

What made Hughes’ goal even more remarkable was how he got there: earlier in the third period, he was high-sticked in the face by Canada’s Sam Bennett, suffering a bloody injury and losing multiple teeth on the play. Instead of coming out of the game, Hughes finished the period and stayed in for overtime, ultimately netting the championship-clinching goal despite the discomfort — an embodiment of guts and determination that immediately became part of Olympic lore.

That mix of physical sacrifice and clutch scoring helped define the game and gave us one of the most iconic moments in recent hockey history: a player who literally lost part of his smile in the pursuit of victory, only to have that same effort end in gold.

This is Heroic Gent stuff!
